Board of education gives annual performance review in closed session

LUCERNE VALLEY • For the third year in a row, Suzette Davis has received the complete vote of confidence from the Lucerne Valley Unified School District's five-member board of education.

"I think she's great," board clerk Jodi Collingham said of the district's superintendent after Thursday night's closed evaluation session.

"We have a wonderful superintendent," said board president Jim Harvey. "There was plenty of good comments from the five board members."

The board also discussed next year's goals for Davis but did not share the specifics in open session.

Afterward, longtime board member Tom Courtney talked about the pleasure of working with a superintendent who is in sync with the board.

"I've worked with a lot of superintendents," Courtney said. "After 20 years it's pretty nice to have someone we can just let work."

Previously the special education department head in the Adelanto Elementary School District, Davis was a school principal in Lucerne Valley before being named to the district's top post in 2011.

Thursday's evaluation session also was the last official business for board member John Buchanan, who decided not to run for reelection. Carmen Fox, who is taking Buchanan's place, will be sworn into office next month.
