A fire-fueled blanket of smoke has settled on the Lucerne Valley and portions of the Victor Valley, prompting the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management to issue an air quality advisory.

The Victorville-based agency also has issued a smoke advisory for the Morongo Valley.

Some smoke and ash from the Mountain wildfire currently burning near Idyllwild in Riverside Country has drifted northward, settling in the affected high desert areas.

The MDAQMD suggests that people who see or smell smoke and/or ash in the air use caution to protect their health.

Those with heart or lung disease, older adults and children should limit their time outdoors. The agency also suggests keeping windows and doors closed and running an air conditioner.

People with lung or heart disease should contact their health care provider if they experience repeated coughing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or chest tightness or pain, the MDAQMD stated in its alert.

The levels of smoke and particles — and relative health risks — depend on how and where the winds are blowing.

The MDAQMD advisory will be in effect as long as conditions warrant.
